Hoi An is tucked away in the Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam. This city (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) was once one of the country’s most visited trading ports, so people from China, Japan, and Europe began staying in the area for trade purposes. This diverse culture spread to the local Hoi An restaurants, attractions, and overall city, creating a unique destination for visitors. 

During our excursions and visits to the city during our retirement travel, we’ve compiled a list of eight of the best restaurants in Hoi An, ranging from traditional dishes to contemporary options. Let’s dive in!

Miss Ly

If you’re craving Vietnamese street food yet don’t want to browse the items from street vendors, Miss Ly is a great option. This restaurant is a local favorite and has been in business for about 20 years. Here you’ll find various Vietnamese dishes and local specialties, including a grilled pork rice noodle dish (cao lau noodles) with fresh herbs. If you want to order something other than rice noodles, try their spring rolls, grilled fish, or fried rice. You’ll find this eatery in Hoi An Ancient Town.

Aubergine49 Restaurant 

As you may be able to guess from the restaurant’s name, this eatery does not serve Vietnamese cuisine. Instead, you’ll find dishes inspired by European and Asian recipes. Aubergine49 boasts a combination of locally sourced and high-quality ingredients for their recipes. A few top choices at this eatery include slow-poached baby lobster tail salad and a roasted rack of lamb. This restaurant is great for a special occasion or date night, especially with its sleek decor and art-covered walls.

White Rose Restaurant

The White Rose Restaurant is a popular Hoi An restaurant that invented its own dish – white rose dumplings. These dumplings can only be found in Hoi An, so it’s a real treat if you can work this eatery into your itinerary. There are only two items on the menu – the white rose dumplings and Hoi An pizza (fried wontons with shrimp, veggies, Vietnamese herbs, and sauce). You can find the famed white rose dumplings at the market and other restaurants, though they’re all supplied by White Rose Restaurant, so it’s best to get them fresh here.

Banh Mi Phuong 

Getting a banh mi in Hoi An Vietnam restaurants is always a treat, especially at Banh Mi Phuong (one of the locals’ favorite spots). It was even recognized as a top banh mi shop by Anthony Bourdain. The sandwiches are served on crispy baguettes with flavorful fillings. If you’re unsure what to order, the “bread mixed” sandwich is a top choice. Since this is a popular eatery, expect a long line of people waiting for the Vietnamese sandwiches. However, the line usually moves quickly, so getting your food won’t take too long.

Many Hoi An Vietnam restaurants specialize in one particular dish and are usually the best at it. In this case, Quan Cao Lau Thanh is a top contender for cao lau noodles. Their version is uber flavorful, affordable, and comes in big portions, so you’ll likely have leftovers for the next meal too. Even though this is a street vendor, they have a good amount of seating, so you can enjoy your Vietnamese food there.

This restaurant is near Hoi An’s Central Market, so it’s a great spot to visit if you want to explore the clothing, souvenirs, and produce at the market after. Orivy Hoi An Local Food Restaurant, is a favorite among city residents. While eating, you’ll be surrounded by a garden-esque decor, helping you feel far away from the loud and busy streets of the town. At Orivy Hoi An, you can choose between a-la-carte menu items and a preset menu with an appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink. Popular menu options include papaya salad and mi quang noodles.

Mango Mango Restaurant 

At Mango Mango Restaurant, you’ll find a modern take on Vietnamese dishes, bright decor, and Thu Bon River views. At this restaurant, you can choose a four-course menu or a-la-carte options. The portions are quite large here, so it’s best to start with fewer dishes and add more if needed. If possible, grab a seat on the upstairs terrace for views of the Japanese Covered Bridge. On the menu, you’ll find options like five-spice duck breast and fried chicken.
